Janelle Monae – “The Electric Lady”

It’s a hard fact, in this reviewer’s opinion, that listening to anything twice will embed it into your musical memory. Think of any toy commercial, those horribly catchy jingles, and you’ll get what I’m talking about. What we choose to do with this uncanny human ability – to enjoy what we hear – is up to us. Do we choose to dig deeper or dance away from the top 40 hits heard at every club? Should we revel in the artistic efforts of our pop music? Does it make us think? Should it?

Of course it should. And that’s precisely why Janelle Monae’s The Electric Lady should get your attention. The album is undeniably catchy. On second listen already I was compelled to turn these tracks up. Looking deeper into Monae’s work revealed an epic narrative of seven parts, told through the unfolding stories of her albums. A concept album the likes of which Pink Floyd might give a deserving nod, The Electric Lady goes much deeper than a surface listen presents, but unlike the 60’s and 70’s forefathers, you can always dance to this money.
